28 days later and 28 weeks after
Part of the project involves wacthing all the classic as well as more recent zombie movies. Our game producer watched “28 days later”and “28 weeks after” the other weekend. If you like zombie movies and particular Romeros movies these are definetely worth checking out too! The movies do portray the zombies in another manner than in Romeros universe as the infected are victims of a rage virus. Nevertheless these are great movies which we can highly recommend:
Originally we had no intention of including sound in our title. But our friend (who spend most of his freetime working with music and sound production) convinced us that we should and signed up as sound engineer. Thus this round of 5 quick questions targets the sound department
Q What are your favorite games?
A: Currently I play a lot of mass effect. Other favorites is Wings for the amiga, champions of krynn, baldurs gate, battlefield II and the first wing commander game.
Q Why do you even want to have sound in a browser based title?
A: The reason for having sound, is that it obviously have a major impact on the games atmosphere. Even a tiny loop with a low frequency pad, and som ambience noise, will do a lot to the games atmosphere.
Q: How do you plan to create ambient sounds that people dosn’t grow tired off?
A: One way of doing that, is by letting the ambient sounds depend on what you encounter in the game. I.e. the screeching swing on the playground. The gnarled growling of a zombie when you are attacked. And last but not least, make the sounds very scary.
Q: What do you think makes a good horror browser based game?
A: One of the keyelements in a good game, is a good history and a good atmosphere. Furthermore with the development of online gaming, the possibility of coorporation to reach a goal is something I like. Also diversity(mangfoldighed?) is important.
Q: What do you look forward to the most in Zombie Pandemic?
A: Great story, great atmosphere, and a lot of possibilities to effect the game through the decisions you make.
Q: And one final bonus question – what do expect to be your favorite weapon for killing zombies in the game?
A: The classic combination. Shotgun for ranged attacks, and the leadpipe for close combat.
Zombies in Plain English
We found this video and thought it was pretty fun not to mention excellent to explain our parents what a zombie is.
5 questions to the game producer
This time our game producer had to answer 5 questions from another member in the team.
Q: What kind of zombies are in your in game?
A: The game is largely inspired by the modern conception of the zombie portrayed in George A. Romero’s movies (Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead in particular). However references to the apocalyptic epidemic scenarios from more recent films such as British films 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later (2002, 2007) and American blockbuster I Am Legend (2007) are evident too. Thus no voodoo, ghouls, holy water or crosses are represented in the game. However themes related to evacuation, epidemic and apocalyptic zombie outburst, city rioting, civilization crumbling, flesh eating zombie hordes and friends who are bitten and turn into enemies will be dominating.
Q: If you had to pick the one feature you look forward to the most in Zombie Pandemic – which one would it be?
A: I really like the whole idea of what we call “game events”. The concept is quite simple. At different points in the game you get make choices which will affects different aspects of the gameplay. Choices can be as simple as choosing to enter a location from the front door or sneak around and use the back door. The whole concept is that you will be provided a choice in a very open universe which you can help shape.
Q: Can I help promote Zombie Pandemic?
A: Most certainly and we would greatly appreciate any help offered if you like to grow the game! The best thing you can do is mention us to your friends (naturally only those who like these kind of games) and think of us if you are active on forums etc. and simply mention us where it’s relevant. That is for instance if you see a discussion or list of zombie or MMORPG games in general where we aren’t represented.
Q: In a few words – what is the announced “trap building” in the game all about?
It’s a rather simple but cool feature. Your character can learn how to build your own traps which you can deploy and use to capture zombies for experiments or simply killing them. It’s nothing fancy but a cool feature that adds to the whole setup of the storyline.
Q: If you had to pick the one favorite zombie game and zombie movie which would it be?
A: I would have to be politically artsy fartsy correct and pick the original classic “Night of the Living Dead” from 1968. Mostly because of its importance defining a whole genre. As for computer game I would definitely have to say Dead Rising. That game is a blast in so many ways. The open-ended sandbox setup combined with cool cliché and truly psychotic psychos is awesome. I completed it twice on my Xbox 360 but still have around 200 achievements left to complete…. I think they are tough and hope for a Dead Rising 2.
Q: And one final bonus question – what do expect to be your favorite weapon for killing zombies in the game?
A: Favorite weapons? I like turtles and assault rifles. I would have to say that I just can wait to bump the zombies with a frying pan and pacify them temporarily using the stun gun. I would have picked the chainsaw but our lead developer already picked that one!
We updated several things on the official website www.zombiepandemic.com including the FAQ and links section. A few new game features have been revealed as well including the upgradeable weapons and skiltree. Go and check it out
We had a fun board game night the other weekend playing the zombie board game “Last night on earth”. Great fun and highly recommendable. We really liked the different game modes which offered different strategic approaches and of course the fact that one player played as zombie battling the others who played as humans. Post a comment if you know of a cool zombie board game!

We managed to get our brilliant lead developer and game designer of Zombie Pandemic away from the coding for 5 quick questions.
Q: What are your favorite games?
A: Fallout, Deus Ex, The Bards Tale, Frontier, Dead Rising
Q: Which computers and gaming consoles do you have or used to have?
A: C64, Amiga 500, PC’s (486, pentium, AMD Athlon, AMD 64 3000+, Intel Quad Core), XBox 360
Q: If you had to pick the one feature you look forward to the most in Zombie Pandemic – which one would it be?
A: The ability to upgrade and modify weapons
Q: In a few words – what is the announced ”advanced combat system” in the game all about?
A: Combat takes place over several rounds stating with some distance between two groups of combatants. If all combatants are content with shooting there will only be ranged combat but if some prefer close combat they will close the distance over a few rounds possibly while being fired at. The rest of the combat rounds will be fought in close combat. The fight ends when one side decides to flee because they have taken too much damage or they are simply killed. The players will be able to equip their characters from a huge range of weapons before combat, weapons that can be customized to do more damage, have better range or more ammunition.
Q: Which other browser based games can you recommend?
A: Urban Dead, Tech Warrior
Q: And one final bonus question – what do expect to be your favorite weapon for killing zombies in the game?
A: Favorite weapon? The chainsaw is a classic against zombies. Apart from that I have always liked the G36 or maybe an mp5 and a baseball bat with nails in it.
The development team is proud to announce an agreement with cartoonist Rune Bødker who will illustrate the game. Some of Runes New concept art has been added to the website. To check out Runes other awesome art work go to his website at www.runebodker.dk
